Visitors Insurance

What is visitors' insurance?

Visitors insurance can encompass different types of coverage that you can buy for a visit to Canada. Examples include travel insurance that provides coverage for travel delays, travel medical insurance, super visa insurance, and other forms of combined coverage.

Travel insurance for trip-related incidents

Insurance that covers things like flight delays, trip interruption, trip cancellation, hotel stays, lost baggage, etc.

Travel medical insurance

Insurance that covers the medical costs incurred from any medical emergencies you experience on your trips, including hospital stays, ER visits, cost of prescription drugs, medical transportation, and more.

Super visa insurance

This insurance is very similar to travel medical insurance but is tailored to fit the parameters of Canada’s super visa program. Coverage must be for at least $100,000 and last 365 days.

What is the deductible for visitors' insurance?

When it comes to travel medical insurance, a deductible refers to the amount of money you agree to pay out of pocket for medical expenses before your coverage begins. Different insurance providers offer various deductible options, ranging from zero to thousands of dollars. The size of your deductible affects your premiums, as higher deductibles can lead to lower premiums. For instance, a zero-dollar deductible means you’ll pay a higher premium, while opting for a deductible can help you lower your premium and cover smaller medical expenses as they arise.

Who needs visitor insurance for a trip to Canada?

Foreign workers and work permit holders

Those visiting Canada temporarily to perform work will not be eligible for public health care and thus should have an independently secured medical insurance plan.

Students

Students attending school in Canada from outside the country may need the protection of a travel medical insurance policy. Many colleges and universities (and student unions) provide access to extended medical care through their group benefit plans.

New residents

New residents of Canada who plan on staying permanently in the country will still need medical insurance while they await their eligibility for publicly funded healthcare. .

Athletes

Athletes visiting Canada for competitions or training should also secure an independent medical plan for the duration of their stay.

Grandparents and family members

Travel medical insurance is crucial for families visiting Canada on a regular visitor visa or super visa as it provides coverage for medical emergencies that may occur during their stay. In the case of a super visa, travel medical insurance is mandatory and must be obtained before the applicant arrives in Canada.

Canadian residents who have spent significant time away from the country

If you have been outside Canada for more than six months, such as snowbirds, your eligibility for Canadian government health insurance or provincial healthcare may have expired. It may take six months after your return to become eligible for public healthcare again. Therefore, it is essential to obtain independent coverage during this waiting period.
